Everything is vibration. From the bustling sounds of cities to the more subtle, silent thoughts that fill our minds, vibrational frequencies are all around us – in fact, they are a part of us. Every sound, thought, and emotion carries a vibrational force and electrical signaling that is powerful enough to stimulate cells in the body and affect matter. Sound alone has the power to both create ease & relaxation, as well as alarm & agitation, and when used with intention, sound can be a powerful catalyst for change. Through the rhythmic stimulation of cells, mental, physical, and emotional regulation and recalibration can occur.

While research around the benefits of sound meditation is still developing, one of the best ways to experience the potentially healing benefits of this practice is through a firsthand, in-person experience. Early neuroscience research explains that at a physical level, sound vibrational healing is believed to work through the perceived resonance response and sensing of tactile receptors in the outer skin, inner skin, and deeper tissues. This response allows various processes within the body, such as cellular waste transport, metabolism, and blood circulation, to be increased. Additionally, when looking at the brain, scientists have hypothesized that sound-based vibration may “increase the flow of cerebrospinal fluid and the removal of metabolic waste” to support healthy functioning of the central nervous system (Karkkainen & Mitsui, 2006)

What is sound bath meditation?

A sound bath is a fully immersive meditative, listening experience created by sound waves produced by one or various instruments, in separate intervals or simultaneously, that elicit the relaxation response by activating the parasympathetic nervous system - also known as the activation of “rest and digest.” Through this relaxation response, participants can more easily reduce stress and drop into a deeply meditative state. In this way, sound baths can be thought of as a vibrational massage for the nervous system in which the healing response can be activated to support healthy functioning of cells and bodily systems.

Instruments like crystal singing bowls, produce sounds at precise frequencies that “wash” over the listener and move through layers of skin, fluid, and bone to generate a profound sense of bodily relaxation and recalibration down to the cellular level. The sound bath experience creates conditions to support an environment of “resonance” within body and mind.

Through the concept of entrainment (defined by Cambridge Dictionary as “the process of making something have the same pattern or rhythm as something else”), breath and thought gradually begin to adapt to that of the dominant frequencies. For many people, sound baths can serve as a far more accessible form of meditation.
